Much of the discipline we provide our children have to do with external motivation. Whether it’s an unpleasant consequence for unwanted behaviour or positive reinforcement for the desired action, it’s still consequence-based motivation. 👈
An alternative to external motivation is to help your child become intrinsically motivated. That is, to help them understand that achieving a goal can be enjoyable in and of itself and that it’s not always about seeking a reward in exchange for a particular behaviour. 😄
Here’s how you do it: 1. Kids who are taught to value effort over results are more likely to keep trying when faced with challenges. So try to praise effort and accomplishments rather than personal traits.🤓 2. Help your kids model your intrinsic motivation by letting them see, through our actions, the satisfaction that comes from intrinsic motivation. You can also choose to share with them your personal experiences where you've found satisfaction in accomplishments without having the accomplishments to be due to rewards-seeking. 🥰
With that said though, we are not advocating that parents should then ditch all rewards system. Instead, select the motivator based on the topic and intent and that the rewards system should simply be implemented more strategically! 🤩

Because snotty noses are gross and we are not interested in wiping them forever, teaching your child how to blow their noses is one life skill that we can’t wait around for them to figure out on their own. 😅
Follow this quick tip to teach them this important life skill - starting with a cotton ball! 🏐
1. Familiarise junior with the idea of blowing air out of his/her nose by getting them to move a cotton ball (or tissue) on a table with only nose air (keeping the mouth closed) 👶👧 2. Now he/she is ready to try with a tissue. Have them gently press one nostril closed while blowing with the other, then switch sides.👈👉 3. Have junior dispose of their tissue once they are done and wash hands to prevent the spread of germs. 🛁
Have fun together by making a game out of racing to see who can blow the cotton ball/tissue across the table the fastest. 🤪🤪
Ps: You will also be able to pat yourself on the back the next time the flu season comes along and this life skill becomes uber handy!
There are so many little life skills that we, as adults, have managed to master over the years. How to put on a jacket. How to tie our shoes. How to blow a bubble with our gum and snap our fingers. (O...
