Do you remember the first time when you had to fend for yourself as an adult in the real world? Be it a phone call or a small administrative task, for a kid facing a big new world, almost nothing feels simple, am I right? 🤔
Learning how to speak up for oneself is about so much more than accountability - it's about developing a sense of autonomy, confidence and pride in oneself! 🤩
Here are 4 simple responsibilities that we can give our kids now to ensure they can become confident when they have to speak up for themselves later:👶
1. Order their own food 🍩🍰🍲🥪 - From the time our kids are able to read a menu, have them order their own food. Have questions about the menu? Allow them to interact directly with the servers themselves. Each interaction is an opportunity to reinforce their communication skills in a safe environment.
2. Resolve their own issues with teachers 👨🏫👩🏫 - If your child has an issue to address with the teacher, have them try to handle the communication on their own. Certainly, you can help by vetting the email (or whatever communication) that they will be sending out but this opportunity enables your child to practice their initiative and this will benefit them in the long run.
3. Describe their health condition to the doctors 👩🔬👨🔬 - Give your child the time needed to put into words how their body is feeling. This is not magically obvious at 2 years old so it's going to take some practice.
4. Fill out their own paperwork - As soon as their handwriting is legible, kids should begin filling out their own paperwork. If not, have them sit with you as you are filling them out. We are sure that the experience will be beneficial if only for them to know how much paperwork they "generate". 😅😂
As adults, we can now look back and be grateful that our parents handled so much for us when we were kids but don't miss out this opportunity to help your child get ready for the real world. 🤸♀️🤸♂️
It was 1997, and I had just settled into my dorm a few days prior. Classes hadn’t even started yet. I was having a problem with registration because I was missing some critical piece of information....
Fun Fact: The Quokka is often referred to as the happiest animal in the world! 🐨
These cute little creatures are often referred to as the happiest animal in the world because of their cute, cheerful grins! They are as big as a domestic cat and have a tail like a rat!
Quokkas are native to Australia and are commonly found on Rottnest Island and Bald Island. They are very friendly in nature and aren’t afraid of humans!
A few years ago, there was even a selfie frenzy where tourists will try to take pictures of themselves with Quokkas and the furry creatures happily posed in the photos with them! 📸
However, due to habitat destruction, quokkas are considered vulnerable to extinction. If you happen to be in Australia and come across a quokka, be gentle with them and remember not to feed them as it may not be safe food for them! ... See MoreSee Less
